# Chain automations

> Prepare a sequence of independently checked operations.

A sequence is useful only when each operation and its handoff are understood. This guide describes the checks to make before combining automations; available chaining controls depend on the workflow.

<h2 id="test-each-operation">
  1\. Test each operation
</h2>

Run and inspect each automation separately on representative input. Record prerequisites and the output passed to the next step. Do not use a chain to hide a failing operation.

<h2 id="define-the-handoff">
  2\. Define the handoff
</h2>

Specify the execution order, shared parameters and any manual selection. Decide what should happen if a step fails or produces no output. Interactive selection may require you to remain in the connected application.

<h2 id="inspect-partial-work">
  3\. Inspect partial work
</h2>

Test a small sequence and inspect every stage. If it stops, identify completed, missing and uncertain results before rerunning. A fresh run may duplicate earlier work. Read [Automation lifecycle](/automation/lifecycle) and [Review and recover](/ai/review).
