# Working with linked models

> Identify ownership and references when working with linked geometry.

Your Revit model may include linked structural or services models. Tell Ideatura which file contains the elements you mean and where the result should go. For example, you may want dimensions in your architectural plan using grids from a structural link.

## 1. Identify ownership

The **host** is your open project; a **link** is another model referenced inside it. Name the link and the view to work in. For example:

> In the active architectural plan, dimension the grids from the structural link. Create the dimensions in this project. Keep the linked model unchanged.

## 2. Check the setup requirement

Check that the link is loaded and the relevant elements are visible. Ask Ideatura to test whether it can use those elements for your task. Dimensioning linked grids and placing a family on a linked wall are different operations; test the one you need.

## 3. Test one case

Start with one view and a small group of elements. In Revit, check that the dimensions reference the intended linked grids and that they were created in the host view. If the task fails, keep the link name, view and error for [Report a problem](https://docs.ideatura.ai/v2/troubleshooting/report-a-problem.md#problem-reports). Avoid copying linked geometry into your model just to make the task run.
