Reading a linked element, referencing it from the host and editing its source document are different operations. Check support for the exact task before relying on a link.

1. Identify ownership

Name the host document, link instance and source element where available. Separate host elements from linked geometry in the requested scope. A host-grid result does not demonstrate that a linked-wall reference works.

2. Check the prerequisite

For dimensions, inspect the native reference. For a family, check its hosting requirements and the actual placement environment. Do not create substitute geometry solely to bypass a link problem without reviewing the effect on the project.

3. Test one case

Start with one view and a known linked element. Inspect the result in the host and confirm which document changed. If selection or reference retrieval fails, capture the exact target and error for Report a problem; avoid generalizing a workaround to every linked model.
