A scan, point cloud, mesh and drawing image contain different information. This page helps prepare a scoped task; it does not establish a one-step scan-to-finished-BIM workflow.

1. Identify the input

Record format, units, scale, source quality and measured dimensions. Name missing sides or obscured elements. Confirm that the input can be read by the selected workflow before committing to reconstruction.

2. Choose the output

Distinguish a visual context model, IFC geometry, native elements and a model suitable for quantities. State tolerances and required categories without assuming they can be met. Use Mixed references to establish source authority.

3. Test a representative part

Choose one portion with known dimensions and compare the output against the source. Record omissions and assumptions. Stop if correction effort or missing evidence makes the result unsuitable; a convincing view does not establish measurement accuracy, completeness or native behavior.
