Create an automation that dimensions rooms across a floor plan, using their bounding walls. Start with one plan, check the measurements and placement, then save the automation for other projects. This example creates overall horizontal and vertical room dimensions relative to the view. It processes the rooms in your selected plans together, without asking you to pick each room during execution.

1. Prepare the plan

Open your project in Revit and choose a floor plan containing rooms and their bounding walls. Confirm that Ideatura is connected to the correct document. Start with a simple area where you can inspect the measurements easily. Check the view’s cut plane, dimension visibility and any dimensions already present.

2. Describe the automation

Start a new chat and explain the result you want:
Create an automation to dimension rooms in selected floor plans. Add overall horizontal and vertical dimensions using the wall faces facing each room. Position the strings through the rooms. Let me select the plans, align dimension strings and optionally move dimension numbers. Preserve existing dimensions and report anything that cannot be dimensioned.
The example uses room-facing wall references and places strings through the room centre, falling back to the room location where needed. It measures the overall span in each available direction; dimensioning every door opening or wall segment would be a separate requirement. Planned screenshot: generated room-dimension automation card and description.

3. Add the controls

Ask Ideatura to expose the choices you need when running the automation: In this example, both alignment options are enabled, the tolerance starts at 1000 mm, and Move dimension numbers is off. Alignment tolerance is not a wall offset. Planned screenshot: room-dimension parameters with one floor plan selected.

4. Run and inspect

Run the automation and inspect the dimensions in Revit. Check that they reference the intended room-facing walls, show the expected measurements and remain readable beside doors, tags and furniture. Read the report for skipped directions, failed strings and unresolved text placement. Some rooms may not have enough suitable wall references. Planned screenshot: room dimensions shown clearly in the Revit plan. Consider different room layouts before expanding the scope:
  • Rectangular rooms: check the two principal measurements.
  • L-shaped rooms: decide whether overall spans are sufficient or each part needs separate dimensions.
  • Angled rooms: specify whether measurements should follow the room orientation or the view axes.
  • Curved boundaries: define the measurements you need and test that case separately.
These are requirements to develop and test; the example automation does not establish support for every layout.

5. Refine and save

Describe a specific correction, for example:
Keep the wall references unchanged. Improve the alignment of dimensions across these rooms and move crowded dimension numbers clear of the room tags.
Check the revised result before saving the automation as Room dimensions. The example version preserves existing dimensions but does not explicitly prevent duplicates. Before repeating a run, use a clean test view or ask Ideatura to add and test duplicate handling. Save the checked Revit project separately, then try another representative plan before processing a larger set.
